Be proactive by making an appointment to meet with your advisor regularly. Many students will meet with their advisor at the start of the semester or a few weeks before pre-enroll begins for the next term.

Be self-aware and respectful: 

• Read and respond to emails sent from your college and advisor accordingly
• Cancel meetings when you're unable to attend (don't be a "no-show")
• Take responsibility for your academic decisions and your future

Be prepared for your advising appointment by writing down your questions or ideas and be ready to share your academic and career goals (even if you might be undecided about either or both!) and know that they'll evolve over time.

Ask your advisor for help or for their perspective on an issue so that you can address it before it becomes a crisis. 

Your advisor(s) has your best interests in mind and will make useful referrals to university resources - follow through on their suggestions.

Stay on top of important information, including your:

• academic requirements
• degree progress, using the resources provided by your college or school
• key dates and deadlines
